Searching for the safe that is right for you can be a difficult task. Safes come in many shapes, sizes and styles and finding out which one fits your needs is a process.

You might think safes are nothing more than square metal boxes. Upon further research, you will find that there is much more to them than you first thought. There are also several things you need to know before installing your safe. Bostons Locksmith is here to help guide you through the process of buying and installing a safe.

The Size

The last thing you want to do is buy a safe that is too small. So before you make a purchase, think about the items that you will be keeping in your safe and how much space you will need. Also, consider that you might want to store other items in your safe in the future. For example, you might want a safe to store your valuable baseball card collection knowing that you will add to it down the road.

Wall Safe

Wall safes and hidden safes aren’t always the best protection for your valuable items. The best protection they offer is concealment. A wall safe is anchored only by a couple of studs and can easily be removed.

Most thieves will look for a hidden or wall safe and if they do find it, it won’t take long to have it dislodged and removed. So it might be best to store highly valued items in a different safe.

Fireproof Safes

Fireproof safes do a fantastic job protecting paper documents from heat and smoke damage. However, these types of safes use thin metal in the construction and this makes them easier to break into. The metal used for fireproof safes can be easily punctured, sawed or otherwise cut with basic hand tools.

On the other hand, don’t use a wall safe or floor safe to house items you want to be protected from fire and smoke.

Also, fireproof means the safe is resistant to fire. Many people make the assumption that a fireproof safe will protect anything they put in it. But media items like CDs, DVDs, computer components, tapes and photos are very sensitive to humidity and heat, which means a fireproof safe isn’t the best option. If you need something to store these media items, a data/media safe is what you should consider.

Gun Safes

There are many types, sizes and styles of gun safes available on the market. Some gun safes are merely gun cabinets that offer no protection against fire or burglary. Your first concern when buying a gun safe should be the construction. The sturdier the construction, the fewer chances thieves have breaking into it.

You should also consider the fire rating. Safes with less than a one-hour fire rating rarely survive a typical house or business fire. There is just no reason to dole out a lot of money on a safe that won’t protect your guns in the event of a fire.
